Une device est, par définition, un objet Mapping chargé de la communication avec l’imprimante en fonction de certains paramètres tels que l’adresse IP, protocole, … Elle doit être rattachée à une seule file d’attente. Elle peut être à l’état Prêt, Suspendu ou en Erreur. Dans les deux derniers cas, les fichiers ne seront pas traités par la device. Plusieurs devices peuvent être connectées à une seule file d’attente (notion de load balancing).
