Ce protocole est assez complet mais peu fiable car peu normalisé (l’implémentation du PJL est différente en fonction du constructeur voire du modèle d’imprimante). Les messages d’erreur ne sont pas normalisés (d’où les paramètres pour appeler un fichier de message PJL et une langue).
