Requirements

Hardware

The OPALE Designer software is compatible with the following operating system versions:

  • Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10
  • Windows Server 2003, 2008 R2, 2012

To ensure proper functioning of the OPALE Suite, the host system must match the minimum hardware set up requirements and must feature the latest updates made available by the operating system's software publisher.

About 50 Mo of available disk space are needed to install Mapping software.

The Designer software is build in 32 bits, but is fully compatible with 64 bits operating systems.

System

Admin rights are required to install the software. Read and write rights on the installation folder are necessary for all users who are likely to use the software from this computer. Read and write rights on the working folder of the Opale Server are also necessary.

Connection to the server can be established via FTP or SFTP transfer, UNC path or network drive.

Depending on the configuration of the client architecture, Designer project source files can be stored on a file server which is shared by all users of the application.

Read and write rights on this sharing folder are required.

Installation process

Installation programs of the software are available for download on the Mapping technical server at: http://serveur.mappingsuite.com.

They are called "M-Designer_setup_version opale".

  • Launch the installation executable.

On Windows 7 and up, the installation program will ask for user rights to be unrestricted, this needs to be authorized:

  • Once installation files have been unzipped, click on "Next" to start the installation:
  • Agree to the license terms.
  • Choose the installation folder.

Important advice:

On Windows 7 and up, even if it does not hinder functioning, it is highly recommended not to install the software in the suggested folder.

by default C:\Program Files (x86)\M-ProcessingServer because of the stringent security restrictions put in place by Microsoft.

For instance, C:\MAPPING\M-Designer", is a better option.

  • Let the installation executable run until the installation is complete, then click on "Finish" to conclude the installation:

The installation program creates a shortcut in the "Start" menu of the computer.

Entries are also added to the Windows Registry of the computer.

WINDOWS REGISTRY:

Some values are saved into the Windows registry during the installation and when using Designer.

Some basic values are written from the installation of the software in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mapping\M-Designer\Settings

In 64 bits systems, the path in the Windows registry is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mapping\M-Designer\Settings

Most values then remain linked to the user connected on the computer which runs the application in its context.

These are then written in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mapping\M-Designer

4 subfolders are created:

  • Recent File List: list of recently opened projects
  • Server: list of M-Processing Server servers configured in the Designer Preferences
  • Settings: application configuration and usage settings
  • Workspace: display settings of the different design interfaces

Updating process

Updating Designer

The Designer software must not be running on the workstation. Launch the new Setup executable you obtained or downloaded, accept for the access rights to be unrestricted if need be, then select the "Repair" option:

The program updates the application files in the installation folder.

Update

When running the new Setup executable obtained, the program analyses the Windows registry of the workstation to retrieve the context. In the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[Wow6432Node\Mapping, the current version installed is detected on the workstation following these steps:

  • If an M-designer key is detected, a standard update is made.
  • If a Mapdraw key is detected, MapDraw version 7 is updated to M-Designer.

During an update, the installation folder of the previous version is retrieved in the registry, then the process carries on updating the application's files. The executables of the previous version are deleted and replaced with the new M-Designer.exe, previous Start Menu shortcuts are also replaced with a new one. Finally, the "M-Designer" entry is added to the registry.

Uninstalling the software

To uninstall the M-Designer software from the computer, the Setup needs to be relaunched, then select option "Remove": The program deletes the application's files, then erases the installation folder (except if files were manually modified) and deletes the "Start" Menu shortcut of the computer.

However, it does not delete entries in the registry so as to retrieve all preferences during a potential reinstallation of the software. If need be, the two entries in HKLM and HKCU can be manually deleted.

Values to delete are stored in these different locations in the Windows registry:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER \SOFTWARE\Mapping\M-Designer
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mapping\M-Designer (if the software was installed with a 32bits operating system).
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432NODE\Mapping\M-Designer (if the software was installed with a 64bits operating system).
